About the Maloti-Drakensberg Transfrontier Project (MDTP)

The Maloti-Drakensberg Transfontier Conservation and Development Project (MDTP) is a collaborative initiative between South Africa and the Kingdom of Lesotho to protect the exceptional biodiversity of the Drakensberg and Maloti mountains through conservation, sustainable resource use, and land-use and development planning. This area encompasses distinct landscape and biological diversity. It is quite rich in species and high in endemism. Excessive livestock grazing, crop cultivation on steep slopes, uncontrolled burning, alien invading species and human encroachment threatens this asset. This five-year project takes a regional and ecosystem approach to conservation and development, and serves to promote biodiversity conservation through linkages with community development based on realization of the region's high potential for nature–based tourism.

Objectives of the Project

The project is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) with its main objective being to conserve globally significant biodiversity in a transfrontier mountain range. A secondary objective of the project is to contribute to community development through nature-based tourism.

Vision

A framework for co-operation between Lesotho and South Africa is to ensure the protection and sustainable use of the natural and cultural heritage of the Maloti-Drakensberg Mountains for the benefit of present and future generations.
